How to be More Productive

Wondering how to be more productive and make more art? I’ve got one secret for you, and it might surprise you!

The best way to be more productive is to schedule in some downtime. It’s so important to balance quiet time with time that you’re productive and very busy.

We’re constantly being told that busyness equals productivity – the busier we are, the more successful we are, right? So we keep on this treadmill. We keep building, we keep creating, we keep producing, we keep pushing through – because that’s what we’re told makes us successful. If we take our foot off the gas for a second, then perhaps we’re being lazy, and we won’t reach our goals.

There’s a little bit of external pressure here, but there’s also those internal voices. You know, the little voice inside that tells says we need to keep up, we need to push through, we need to keep on – we all have that, don’t we?

The truth is, this is a one way ticket to burn out and despondency. You need to give yourself some quiet time to really listen to your intuition.

If you give yourself periods of rest, and quiet, and even play, it allows your body to restore but as an extra benefit it allows your creativity to rekindle, and inspiration will start to come through again. It’s so important to make time to rest.

Scheduling in quiet time also has another benefit as it allows you the time and space to say, is this next step in my business right for me? Do I feel aligned with this project, or where I’m going? Giving yourself time to think is essential. When you’re super busy, dashing around, trying to get all the things done, you might not have the clarity of thought and the space to know whether you’re heading in the right direction. You’re just on the hamster wheel, running and running, trying to get things done.

Having practices like meditation, journaling, periods of play, periods of quiet time, and rest, reading – whatever it is for you that gives you space and time away from the business – will allow those new ideas to germinate. Make yourself a priority, and schedule in some time for quiet.

We’re just not meant to be “on” all the time. It’s a bit like anything in nature – there’s night and day, there’s winter and summer. We’re just not meant to be constantly at it. There are periods where we should be just resting, restoring, replenishing. It does absolute wonders for your art business as well as for you!

It took me until very late in life to discover how beneficial it was to rest and to be quiet. I’m sure there were a lot of people out there who’d say I wish she’d be a little quieter! I find it so helpful, and I hope you do too.
